The interaction between football players on social media often reflects sports rivalries and memorable moments in the sport.

A recent example occurred when midfielder Toni Kroos, from Real Madrid and the German national team, provoked a reaction by recalling the historic 7-1 thrashing of Brazil by Germany at the 2014 World Cup.

Brazilian stars respond to Kroos

  • In a post on Twitter and Instagram, Kroos replaced the “1” and “7” numbers of the year 2017 with the flags of Brazil and Germany, respectively, in a kind of joke;
  • The repercussion was immediate, dividing opinions between those who saw the joke as perspicacious and others who interpreted it as disrespectful;
  • Neymar, in turn, decided to join the “teasing” and responded to Kroos with an emoji representing a hand, symbolizing the five World Cup titles won by Brazil, one more than Germany.

Joke?

Faced with the reactions, Kroos soon clarified that it was just an innocent joke. “A lot of attention for a small joke. I wish you all a safe and happy new year!”, the player wrote in a subsequent tweet.

It’s important to remember that at the time, Neymar and Kroos were rivals in clubs, respectively at Barcelona and Real Madrid, which added an extra element to the social media interaction.

Ronaldo also responded

In addition, former player Ronaldo Phenomenon, world champion with the Brazilian national team, also got involved in the joke by posting an image of one of his goals in the 2002 World Cup final, in which Brazil defeated Germany 2-0, bringing up a moment of triumph for the Brazilians.

Remembering Zagallo

Sambafoot Series launched a new documentary about the football legend Zagallo. Known as ‘Velho Lobo‘ and as superstitious as it gets, Zagallo helped shape what Brazilian football is nowadays — as a player and as a coach.
