Bahia have been dumped out of the Copa Sudamericana 2020 after losing to Defensa y Justicia on Wednesday night at the Norberto Tomaghello stadium. Bahia lost the first in Salvador to a 3-2 score-line and fell to defeat at the hands of the Argentine side with another 1-0 loss. It meant Bahia got knocked out of the competition with a 4-2 aggregate.

A familiar face in Braian Romero scored the only goal of the game.

Elsewhere, both sides saw their players dismissed after Rossi (Bahia) and Acevedo were shown their marching orders in the second half.

In order to overturn the deficit, Bahia had to win the game by two goals and also stop Defensa y Justicia from scoring as well. It was no surprise to see the Brazilian side going all out from the onset but they could not find the early goal that could have changed the complexion of the game.

The game looked like it was headed for a goalless stalemate until Braian Romero scored for the home side once again. He already bagged a brace in the first leg of the match and he proved to be a thorn in Bahia’s part once again. With the goal, the Defensa y Justicia forward also moved level with Gilberto at six goals in the chase of the top scorer award for the Copa Sudamericana.

Bahia have now been knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana for the second time. The same also happened in 2018 when they were sent out by Athletico-PR via penalties.

With Bahia now out of the competition, their focus switches solely on the Brazilian Championship. They are currently in 16th place with 28 points and are also without a win in their last four games.
