Santos, once known for showcasing the likes of Pelé and Neymar, are now experiencing one of the most challenging moments in their history. Falling to Brazil’s second division for the first time in 2023 was a major blow, but the risk of remaining in Serie B for another year is even worse for such a storied side.

This scenario has generated fear in recent days as it looks like a real possibility. Peixe started the season on the right foot but have been unable to keep up with that great start, as they find themselves out of promotion spots while on a four-game losing streak.

A record of five wins and five losses in 10 matches has created an atmosphere of uncertainty in the halls of Vila Belmiro, where the future of coach Fábio Carille seems to be hanging by a thread.

Santos are currently 7th in Serie B with 15 points, three points shy of fourth place, which grants the last ticket to the top tier of Brazilian football. However, the current fourth-placed team, Sport Recife, have one game in hand.

Of course, there is still a long way to go and there’s plenty of time to turn things around, but the current situation is tough for a club aiming to leave the second division as fast as possible. Meanwhile, the atmosphere within the club is far from great, with sporting director Alexandre Gallo on the hot seat.

In football, sometimes all it takes is one victory to start changing the outlook. Therefore, today’s game (June 19) against Goiás could be a turning point for Santos.
