Corinthians asserted the victory at home against Newell’s to stay alive in the Copa Sudamericana. After the 2-1 win in the first leg, those led by Vanderlei Luxemburgo managed a 0-0 draw in Rosario to get a ticket to the quarterfinals. Although they had no problems on the field, it was a “hot” rematch for what happened in the stands.

Visiting fans burned Argentine banknotes, an action that could cost the São Paulo club a sanction from Conmebol. According to Globo Esporte, the Disciplinary Unit of the entity that governs South American soccer is already investigating this episode and could open a file.

The fact could be punished by article 10.2, point D, of the Disciplinary Code of the organization, which states: “The use of gestures, words, objects or other means to transmit any inappropriate message in a sporting event, especially if it is of a political, offensive or provocative”.

A worrisome case in South American football

If it considers that it failed to comply with the aforementioned article of the regulation, Conmebol could warn or impose a financial fine on Corinthians. It should be noted that it would not be the first time that this has happened to them, since their fans had broken Argentine pesos against Boca Juniors last year. That time, the club was fined $30,000.

Likewise, from the Timão side they also showed their repudiation of racist acts by some Newell’s fans at the Marcelo Bielsa stadium.

Unfortunately, in recent times there have been moments of great animosity every time Argentine and Brazilian teams faced each other. In addition to the tension on the field, the hostility between the fans is alarming. On one side they tear bills, on the other you see racist gestures. Discrimination has been severely punished by Conmebol in recent times, with minimum fines of $100,000 and sanctions that could include playing games behind closed doors.
