In a much-needed win after losing 4-0 to Palmeiras on Monday, Corinthians bounced back and beat Sport 3-0 at home on Thursday.
Gustavo Mosquito, Mateus Vital and Jô were on target as Timão returned back to winning ways.
Corinthians were in total control of the opening 45 minutes of the game, with the home side looking to recover from the humiliating result from their last game. They had better ball possession, the team connected well and was more aggressive in getting the ball back whenever they lost it.
It was no surprise Timão opened up the scoring in the 34th minute with Mosquito latching on to a pass from Cazares.
Leão’s defence snoozed for a second, allowing Cazares pass-through for Mosquito to score at close range.
The hosts later put the game to bed immediately after the break when Mateus Vital stole the ball from Iago Maidana and drove his shot to the left corner of the post from outside the goal area to make it 2-0.
Corinthians continued to dominate and got their third of the evening late on in the 80th minute. Jô had his first attempt to score saved by Polli but made no mistake from the resulting rebound.
Sport thought they had pulled one back in the closing stages of the game but the goal was ruled out for offside. The away side sits at the edge of the relegation zone, level on points with Vasco in 17th place.
Corinthians are back to winning ways and sit in eighth place with 45 points.
For their next outing, Sport will host Bahia on Sunday while Corinthians will return to the field next Monday to face Red Bull Bragantino.
