Corinthians lost 2-0 at home to Peñarol, and are on the verge of missing out of the Copa Sudamericana, after failing to win their first two games. Ex-Atlético-MG player David Terans and Giovanni González were on target for the away team.
Although Corinthians had all the possession and created more chances, the game was an open contest. Giovanni González put his side in the lead early on in the 13th minutes. Bruno Méndez recovered the ball from the middle and found the defender in the middle to make it 1-0.
After going down, Corinthians made clear chances and had three goal scoring opportunities to draw level but failed to make them count
Timão also had a penalty claim late in the second half, when Kagelmacher brought Luan down with a dangerous tackle in the area, but the referee waved it off in the visitor’s favor.
After the break, Corinthians confidence was dampened, giving Peñarol the edge to dominate the game and add to their advantage. After a series of passes, Gargano found Piquerez free on the left, who placed a through ball to Terans to make it 2-0.
Mancini made changes and brought in fresh legs to try and get something out of the game, but nothing significant changed and the game ended 2-0 in favor of Peñarol.
Speaking after the game, Corinthians left-back Fabio Santos expressed his disappointment at the result. He said: “A disastrous result, which totally escaped what we expected. It had already been like that in the first game, in Paraguay, today again. We finished many times, but their goalkeeper was on a great night. They knew how to control the game from the beginning, they were more. We are saddened by the result, unfortunately things are not happening, it is to keep working. ”
Timão will face São Paulo next at the Neo Química Arena on Sunday for the 10th round of the Paulista Championship.
