The game was valid for the 11th round of the Brazilian Championship and another consecutive victory now takes Timão out of the relegation zone for now.
Bahia had lots of possession in the first half (61%) but it was Corinthians who made the most of their few chances in the opening stages.
Otero opened the scoring for Corinthians in the 17th minute via a deflected shot from a corner kick. 17 minutes later, a great play by Lucas Piton left Roni with an open space to make it 2-0 in favour of Timão. Paraiba pulled one back for Bahia two minutes later and the first half ended with Corinthians ahead at 2-1.
Corinthians returned better in the second half and saw more possession of the ball. They kept relying on Otero’s long shots and it paid off soon. One of those shots led to a corner kick and Gil made it 3-1 from the resulting set-piece. A minute from time, Saldanha grabbed one back for Bahia but it only turned out to be a consolation goal.
The victory takes Corinthians to 12 points, further away from the relegation zone and now in the middle of the table. Bahia remain with nine points and are the first team outside the relegation zone. However, they can still be overtaken by Botafogo, Coritiba and Bragantino in the round.
Corinthians returns to the field only on the other Wednesday to face Sport in an evening clash in Ilha do Retiro. Bahia only plays on September 26, a Saturday against Athletico-PR at Arena da Baixada. Both games are valid for the 12th round of the Brazilian Championship.
