The 2023 Conmebol Libertadores is reaching its crucial stages, with only one round left to complete the group phase. Matchweek 5 saw many teams secure a place in the round of 16, while for others there’s still a lot to be played for.

Only two Brazilian clubs have so far sealed a place in the knockout phase, with both Palmeiras and Athletico Paranaense punching a ticket to the next round. Corinthians, on the other hand, have already been eliminated.

2023 Copa Libertadores group stage standings after Matchday 5

Flamengo would only need a draw or Racing avoiding defeat against Ñublense to qualify. However, if they win and the Argentine side doesn’t beat the Chilean club, Jorge Sampaoli’s men would secure first place.

Internacional would need a victory against DIM to advance and win their group. However, a draw could also let them qualify for the next stage if Metropolitanos don’t lose to Nacional. If the Porto Alegre sides loses and the Uruguayans draw, the goal differential would come into play.

Palmeiras are already in, so their game against Bolivar will define who finishes atop Group C. Fluminense, meanwhile, would get through the next round by avoiding defeat against Sporting Cristal. A loss, however, would complicate their chances depending on River’s result vs. The Strongest.

Corinthians are no longer in contention, but they can still qualify for the Sudamericana. Therefore, their match against Liverpool will be a six-pointer.

The only thing left for Paranaense is to clinch the first spot in Group G, where Mineiro will face Libertad with a place in the round of 16 at stake.
