There is less than a month until the CONMEBOL Libertadores 2023 final. Fluminense and Boca Juniors will meet on Saturday, November 4 at the Maracaná, with the most important trophy on the continent at stake. Although these are teams from different countries, there are some connections between the two.

In addition to their previous confrontations in this competition, there is a protagonist who gives a lot to talk about ahead of the final. Germán Cano, figure of the “Tricolor”, has a certain history with the “Xeneize”, despite never having worn its colors. In fact, he scored his first professional goal at La Bombonera, Boca’s home.

Cano’s first professional goal in La Bombonera

The Argentine attacker was barely 20 years old when he scored for the first time. It was March 29, 2008, when he was just taking his first steps with Lanús. But their rival that day was not Boca Juniors, but San Lorenzo de Almagro, who played home at La Bombonera after suffering a closure at the Nuevo Gasómetro.

Cano’s goal did not prevent the defeat of “Granate”, who lost 3 to 1 in the match corresponding to date 8 of the Clausura Tournament. He scored again on matchday 12, in a 3-2 loss against Vélez Sarsfield.

The final of the Libertadores 2023 will be the third time that Cano faces Boca, a rival whom he has not yet been able to convert but whom he did win. In the 2009 Clausura, Lanús defeated them 1-0. In the following tournament, the forward faced the Ribera club again, but this time with the colors of Chacarita: “Xeneize” won 3 to 0.

At 35 years old, Cano reaches the definition of the cup with great chances of finishing as the tournament’s top scorer. With 12 points, he is nine ahead of both his teammate John Kennedy and Luis Advíncula, Boca’s top scorer. Furthermore, this is the same number of goals scored by Jorge Almirón’s team in the entire competition.
