A day after the draw between Brazil and Colombia at the end of the group stage of the Copa América 2024, Conmebol acknowledged that there was a refereeing error in the unawarded penalty for Vinicius Junior in the first half:

“In the 42nd minute, in a dispute for the ball inside the box, a defender does not touch the ball, and, as a result of the dispute, reckless contact is produced for the action. The referee is unable to observe the action and allows the game to continue. The VAR, in its protocol check, analyzes different angles, speeds and considerations and is unable to identify that the defender does not touch the ball before recklessly coming into contact with the attacker. The VAR incorrectly confirms the original field decision.”

Argentine Mauro Vigliano, in charge of the VAR, reviewed the play in question for almost two minutes before recommending to referee Jesús Valenzuela not to call the infraction.

The match ended 1-1, with the Cafeteros finishing as leaders of Group D, while the Seleção had to settle for second place.

Thus, Dorival Junior’s team will face Uruguay this Saturday (6) in Las Vegas for a spot in the semifinals of the Copa América 2024. The winner will then face either Colombia or Panama.
