The first leg of the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals between Coquimbo Unido and Defensa y Justicia had to be postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak. The Argentine side announced three new positive cases, which prompted an announcement of cancelation to be made hours before the match.
The new date has been rescheduled to be on the 12th of January in Asunción, Paraguay. The stadium is yet to be decided upon.
Coquimbo Unido were present at the venue and even published photos and videos of the team’s arrival despite the confirmation of the postponement of the match.
On the other hand, Defensa y Justicia arrived at Chile in the late hour on Monday, with all 56 members of the team, tested negative before boarding. However, with the protocol on ground placed by the Chilean government, fresh test was conducted and three players tested positive.
Washington Camacho, Francisco Pizzini and Rafael Delgado were the three players in question who tested positive.
All 56 members of the squad were forced to isolate by the Chilean health officials, after a protocol was put in place by Conmebol for both Chile and Uruguay, who are the only two countries required to conduct fresh test for the virus.
This would be the second change made to the semi-finals. The original venue of the contest was moved from Coquimbo to Santiago on Wednesday last week. The reason was because of the mandatory isolation of the Argentine team when moving from the Chilean capital to the city of Coquimbo Unido.
Conmebol confirmed that there will be two legs still to be played, and the time and stadium of the match in Paraguay will be decided later on. Also details on the return match taking place in Argentina which was initially scheduled on the 14th will be relayed soon.
