Club World Cup: When was the last time the Libertadores champion defeated the Champions League winner?

The FIFA Club World Cup will once again be decided between the Copa Libertadores champion and the UEFA Champions League winner. After Flamengo failed to set up a meeting against Real Madrid in February, Fluminense got the job done to secure a matchup against Manchester City.

Though the European teams have been dominant in this competitions, there have been some South American upsets, all of them produced by Brazilian clubs. The last CONMEBOL representative to be crowned world champion were Corinthians, who took down Chelsea in a hard-fought 1-0 win in 2012 with a goal from Paolo Guerrero.

So far, three Brazilian teams have won the Club World Cup: Corinthians (twice), São Paulo, and Internacional. However, the most successful club in this tournament are Real Madrid, who lifted the trophy on five occasions. Behind them are lifelong rivals Barcelona, with three trophies to their name.
