Ceará claimed their first win over Vasco da Gama in São Januário with a 4-1 demolition of the home team.
In the reverse fixture earlier in the season, Vasco won the game 3-0 and Ceará sort of took out their revenge in this game.
It took only three minutes for Ceará to impose themselves in the game.
Carlinhos made a mistake for Vasco that allowed his opponents to make a quick counter-attack that ended with Pedrinho opening the scoring. In the 25th minute, Cléber extended his side’s lead with a good header to make it 2-0.
It was a game where Ceará saw much less of the ball but were very clinical in front of goal. In fact, they had less than 40% of possession all game to buttress that point.
Vasco gave themselves hope of a comeback when Ribamar pulled one back via a penalty in the 65th minute but goals from Saulo and a penalty from Vinicius put the game beyond doubt to hand Ceará a big victory and all three points.
The victory saw Ceará move five places up and up to 10th position with 29 points. However, they are level on points with Fortaleza and Corinthians. They will take on Bahia next in the league on Saturday.
For their next outing, Vasco face a tough Brasilerao game against Grêmio this coming Sunday. They remain in 17th place and in the relegation zone although they still. Prior to that game, they will first all of take on Defensa y Justicia for the second leg of the Copa Sudamericanna.
