The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced this Wednesday (30th) the resignation of coach Pia Sundhage from the command of the Brazilian Women’s Football Team. The Swedish coach took over the Women’s National Team in July 2019.
“We are ending Pia’s work with the CBF as of today. I want to thank her and all those who worked with and were part of the technical committee of the Brazilian Women’s Football Team, which participated in the Women’s World Cup. Pia also brought, in this period from 2019 until now, a job that, for the CBF and for Brazilian football as a whole, was very important. We wish her, in her new challenges, every success”, said the president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues.
In the coming days, the CBF will announce the new technical commission, which will start the cycle with a view to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.

A mixed record
Pia Sundhage bows out after a bumpy stint at the head of the Brazilian National Team. Her appointment in July 2019 had raised hopes and expectations, but the results were mixed.
Under her leadership, the team alternated between dazzling feats and disconcerting setbacks. The pinnacle of her reign is unquestionably the glorious victory at the Women’s Copa América in 2022. However, it is difficult to forget the less glorious episodes, such as the last sinking in the World Cup, where Brazil sadly failed to get past the group stage. In addition, during the 2020 Olympics, a place in the quarter-finals was won, but the outcome remained below expectations.
