The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) will pay tribute to Roberto Dinamite. Starting from this edition, the entity will name the trophy for the top scorer of the Brazilian Championship after the greatest idol in Vasco’s history. In addition to the trophy, the winner will also receive a financial prize.

The announcement was made on Tuesday (5) by the CBF’s marketing director, Lênin Franco, during the Technical Council meeting of the competition. The meeting was attended by the 20 representatives of the competition.

With 190 goals in the Brazilian Championship, Roberto Dinamite passed away in January last year at the age of 68, a victim of colon cancer.

“Roberto Dinamite is one of the greatest legends in world football. He achieved a fantastic feat by becoming the all-time top scorer of the Brazilian Championship. For all this, it is only fair to immortalize this record by naming this star after the trophy for the competition’s top scorer,” said CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues.

The honoree’s son, Rodrigo Dinamite, participated in the meeting and thanked for the creation of the award.

“I am very happy with this tribute to my father. Thank you for keeping my father’s legacy alive. I feel very grateful,” said Rodrigo.

The player born in Duque de Caxias had a remarkable career with the Brazilian National Team. Wearing the Yellow Jersey, the forward scored 25 goals and was the top scorer in Brazil’s runner-up finish at the 1983 Copa America. He participated in two World Cups: in 1978 and 1982.

Roberto Dinamite is the greatest idol in Vasco’s history. At the Rio de Janeiro club, he scored 708 goals in 1,110 matches wearing the Vasco jersey, and won one Brazilian Championship (1974) and five Rio de Janeiro State Championships (1977, 1982, 1987, 1988, and 1992).

Roberto Dinamite also played for Barcelona in Spain and wore the jerseys of Portuguesa and Campo Grande.

After retiring from football, the former player pursued a career in politics and served as president of Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama.
