It is their third consecutive triumph in the competition and it marks a feat that has not been repeated since 1987. Gremio won the 39th Campeonato Gaúcho title in their history and have cut the deficit to Inter. Tricolor are only just six titles away from Colorado in the pecking order for most title triumphs.
With the advantage of having won the first leg by 2-0, Gremio saw Diego Souza open the scoring early in the first half at the Arena. His goal came in the 15th minute.
Laércio headed home and leveled the scores just towards the end of the first half as he leveled matters in the 43rd minute.
Not long after the second half began, Caxias would go on to score the winner for the tie but it was not enough. Bruninho scored the goal in the 55th minute of the second half, in a shot that deflected in Kannemann. After that, Grêmio held the pressure of Caxias until the final whistle to make the party.
Despite the loss for Tricolor, it meant they won the Campeonato Gaúcho via an aggregate 3-2 scoreline on the evening.
After the game, Gremio boss Renato Gaucho expressed how pleased he was after seeing his side crowned champions. He hailed the team’s mentality and their resilient effort on their road to the finals.
This was the 100th edition of Campeonato Gaúcho, in a year marred by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. The competition had to take a forced break for more than four months and games eventually resumed without fans after the restart of football.
