Vasco claimed a 1-0 victory against Santos on home turf on Sunday.
It took the home side only nine minutes to get on the mark, with Carlinhos scoring the only goal of the game. It also saw Vasco end their five-game unbeaten streak.
The score line didn’t speak well of the game in general. Santos dominated the play but couldn’t find the much needed goal.
Swift counter-attacking from Vasco saw Germán Cano make a good individual run down the left before playing the ball through to Vinícius in the middle. Vinicius then played a one-two with Cano before the forward passed the ball to Carlinhos to open up the scoring. That goal proved to be the only goal of the game in a match that generally lacked creativity.
Santos had several attempts on goal in the game to level matters, but couldn’t get the ball pass Fernando Miguel. Juninho had a chance to double his side’s advantage but the effort was eventually wasted.
Fernando Miguel made several saves toward the end of the first half to deny Madson and Jorge from getting on the score sheet.
With the visitors having all possession of the ball, Vasco sat back at the defence to maintain their goal advantage, which allowed them get all three points at the end of the day.
Vasco now sits at the edge of the drop zone same on point with Bahia who is in 16th place, having played on game less.
For their next outings, Vasco will play against Athletico-PR this coming Sunday while Santos will be looking to return to winning ways when they welcome Ceará at home also next Sunday.
