Cafu has high expectations for Brazil in the 2024 Copa América. Although the Seleção arrives at the tournament with many doubts after months of instability, the former fullback believes that his country has more chances of being champions than Argentina, the winner of the last edition in 2021.

“In this Copa América, it is fully expected. Brazil, wherever it goes, goes to be the champion. The expectation is that Brazil will be one of the protagonists of the Copa América, with full conditions to win this Copa América. Argentina is the last world champion, so it is one of the favorites, but today I see Brazil even more favored than Argentina to win this Copa América,” stated the legendary defender in an interview with the EFE agency.

Among his reasons for nominating Verdeamarela as a serious candidate, Cafu named Vinicius Junior, who has had a great level at Real Madrid and is one of the top figures in the sport today: “I see Vinícius Júnior as one of the key players who has to take on the responsibility of the Brazilian national team at the moment. I see him already in that leadership role.”

Cafu’s admiration for Messi

Although he has full confidence in his national team, the 1997 and 1999 America’s champion showed his weakness for Lionel Messi, the emblem of Argentina who will seek to conquer another title in the United States.

“We are fans of the maestro (Messi), aren’t we? We are. We are fans of the great players, even though we are Brazilian. Seeing the maestro play is fantastic, even if he is in the United States, he is used to it, he is in his natural habitat playing football. It’s going to be great to see Argentina playing, maybe in a final against Brazil. People will go to this Copa América to see these world football powers together again,” said Cafu.
