The Argentine team has not played officially since March. Regardless of that, it was a lot of work for Tricolor who came out ahead with Brenner’s goal early on in the 13th minute.
However, it was a different story in the second half.
Lanús turned the tie around with a player who also bagged a brace.
Sand scored his first goal in the 53rd minute before grabbing his second in the 84th minute.
It didn’t take long for São Paulo to level the scoring as Brenner scored again to make it 2-2 in the 87th minute.
The game looked like it was going to end in a draw but there was late heartbreak for Tricolor. A late defensive error cost São Paulo in extra time and Facundo Quignon was happy to capitalize on it to grab the winner for the home side. São Paulo also had a goal annulled, also scored by Brenner, in a dubious move.
Despite the defeat, São Paulo’s mission in the return game is not so complicated. Because of the goals scored away from home, Tricolor needs to win by a goal difference (up to 2 to 1) to advance to the round of 16.
São Paulo returns to the field on Sunday against Flamengo in Maracanã for the 19th round of the Brazilian Championship. For the South American, the return game of the round against Argentine side Lanús is scheduled for Wednesday in the stadium Morumbi, the capital of São Paulo. Tricolor will fancy their chances of turning the tie around with a win.
