São Paulo came out on top on Saturday as they took on Fluminense in Maracanã. They beat the home side 2-1 with Brenner banging a brace helping his side gain more grounds in the race to the title. Brenner’s double now takes his tally to 22 goals of the season so far and the 20-year old continues to impress on all fronts.
The visitors came into the game with so much drive and dominated every aspect of the match.
Fluminense didn’t convince in the opening stages and it was no surprise they conceded just after 15 minutes. In the transition of play, Reinaldo received the ball from Igor Gomes from the left side of the pitch and crossed the ball to Brenner who appeared to be unmarked in the area and made no mistake by putting his side in the lead.
In the 53rd minute, Gabriel Sara failed to clear his lines and gifted the ball to Fred who volleyed his shot past Tiago Volpi to level matters.
São Paulo lost intensity after the equalizer but they would eventually get back in the lead 16 minutes from time. Brenner once again got on the score-sheet. Brenner’s first attempt on goal was saved but he was able to get his second of the night via a rebound.
São Paulo now sits at 56 points going seven points clear at the top over Atletico-MG who sits second with 49 points. On the other hand, Fluminense missed out of entering the top six and remain one point behind Palmeiras.
The hosts return to face Flamengo in a classic match on January 6, while São Paulo hosts Grêmio in the Copa do Brasil semifinal before visiting Red Bull Bragantino in the Brazilian Championship on January 6.
