On Monday in Cartagena, Spain, the Brazilian women’s team drew 0-0 with Canada in their final session before coach Pia Sundhage announces the list of call-ups for the Tokyo Olympics.
On Friday, the 18 athletes who will compete for Olympic gold will be revealed.
The women’s team enters the Olympics with a record of 11 win, five draws, and two losses (against France and the United States) in 18 friendly matches in over two years of training under head coach Pia Sundhage.
During this period, Brazil have faced Canada the most times, going undefeated in four games, winning two and drawing two. This comes after their most recent 3-0 win against Russia.
The game was a fantastic test for both teams to stay in shape before the Olympics, with plenty of action on both sides. On Monday, however, the defence won the game, which was also good news for Pia Sundhage, who has long expressed a desire to strengthen the Brazilian team’s scoring prowess and defensive solidity.
Furthermore, this was not the case versus Canada because the Brazilian attackers were not having their best offensive day.
The women’s team will prepare for their travel to Tokyo by spending time in Portland, Oregon. They will meet China in their first Olympic game in Group F on July 21 at Rifu F. Then, on the 24th, they play at the same stadium against the current world cup runner-up and European champion Netherlands. On the 27th, they will play Zambia in their final match of the first stage in Saitama.
In group E, Canada will compete for the title against Japan, Chile, and the United Kingdom.
