Women’s Copa Libertadores is back! Starting this Thursday (5), Palmeiras, Corinthians and Internacional will represent Brazil in the continental competition, which will be played in Colombia until October 21st.

This is the 15th edition of the championship. In the other 14 editions, only in three of them did no Brazilian team emerge victorious. In 2022, Palmeiras lifted the competition cup.

How does the Libertadores work?

The 16 South American clubs will be divided into four groups (A, B, C and D), with four teams each, and will compete in the first phase against each other. The top two from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The first in one group faces the second in the other group, for example: 1ºA x 2ºB. The winners of each duel advance to the semi-finals and then those who do best will play in the grand final on October 21st.

In search of the second championship

The first team to enter the field will be Palmeiras. Current South American champion, Verdão, who is in Group A, debuts against Barcelona of Ecuador, this Thursday (5), at 5 pm (Brasília time). In the second round, the Palestrinas face Caracas, from Venezuela, on Sunday (8), also at 5pm, and end their participation in the group stage against Atlético Nacional, from Colombia.

In 2022, Verdão had a great campaign, beating the biggest Argentine champion, Boca Juniors, 4-1 in the grand final of the competition.

Among the team’s highlights are striker Amanda Gutierres, top scorer in the Women’s Brasileirão 2023, and striker Bia Zaneratto, called up to represent Brazil at the next FIFA Date in October.

First dispute of the Gurias Coloradas

Internacional is ready to compete in its first Libertadores. The Gurias Coloradas won their place in the competition after reaching the final of the Women’s Brasileirão in 2022 and securing runner-up.

The Coloradas’ first challenge will be against Nacional, from Uruguay, this Friday (6), at 5pm, at the Pascual Guerrero Stadium, in Cali. Then, they will face América de Cali, on the 9th, at 7:30 pm, in the same stadium. The last duel will be in Bogotá, against the runner-up, Boca Juniors. The clash will take place on October 12th, at 7:30 pm, at the Techo Stadium.

Among those listed are Priscila Flor and Belén Aquino, who scored 7 and 6 goals in the Women’s Brasileirão 2023 respectively. In addition to shining at the club, the players are also prominent in the youth and main teams of Brazil and Uruguay.

The Brabas want to take back America

Corinthians is looking for another title in the Libertadores. The team has already won three titles, in 2017, 2019 and 2021 and is looking for its fourth title in the competition. In the last edition, Brabas ended up being eliminated in the quarter-finals by Boca Juniors, from Argentina.

The Alvinegras are in Group C of the competition alongside Colo-Colo, from Chile, Always Ready, from Bolivia, and Libertad Limpeño, from Paraguay. The debut will be against the Chilean team this Friday (6), at 7:30 pm (Brasília time).

The team has six players called up for the Brazilian team in friendlies against Canada: Lelê (goalkeeper), Tamires and Yasmim (wingers), Luana and Duda Sampaio (midfielders) and Gabi Portilho (striker). In addition to them, other Corinthians athletes, such as Jheniffer and Vic Albuquerque, had a good Brasileirão and are also ready for the competition.
