As Rio Grande do Sul recovers from the disaster caused by the floods that hit the state earlier this month, Grêmio and Internacional are already focusing on their return to competition, which for now will be outside Porto Alegre due to the aftermath of the catastrophe.

While the venues for their upcoming matches have been decided, the clubs will soon need to determine where their derby will be played. Instead of postponing it, the idea is to play the match in neutral territory, so both sides are considering moving the Gre-Nal to the iconic Maracanã.

“Actually, there is a proposal for that (Gre-Nal at Maracanã) and we are analyzing it because it was also mentioned in the meeting,” said Grêmio’s president, Alberto Guerra.

Inter’s president Alessandro Barcellos, meanwhile, stated, “In the case of the Gre-Nal, the home advantage belongs to Grêmio. It will depend on how Grêmio envisions it so that we can reach a decision.”

The derby was originally scheduled for the weekend of June 15, but the postponement of the championship due to the situation in Rio Grande do Sul will push this fixture to the following week.

Additionally, both Tricolor Gaúcho and Colorado are also considering cooperation to share stadium and training center. While Inter plans to return to Beira-Rio within 60 to 90 days, Grêmio have no estimated return date to their home ground. On the other hand, Inter’s training center was more affected than their rival’s, which could potentially be used by both teams.

Remembering Zagallo
