Unfortunately, racism continues to be a topic in world football. Not long ago, the abuse suffered by Vinicius Junior in Spain was all over the news. Far from learning from this shameful events, certain fans in South America keep on making racist gestures and chants.
Brazilian teams and supporters are the main victims of this, and the Fluminense game against River Plate in Buenos Aires for Matchday 5 of the 2023 Conmebol Libertadores group stage is proof of that. In the wake of the racist situations that took place in Argentina, the Brazilian Minister of Justice Flávio Dino said he will request the Argentinean authorities to take action.

This embarrassing events overshadow what should be an enjoyable competition, since there are many beautiful things in South American football. Sadly, racism is still an issue to tackle. In Rio de Janeiro, a law was approved to stop games when racism is detected.
Conmebol has also taken significant measures to discourage these kinds of episodes, fining teams whenever racist episodes occur. Even so, fans continue to attack each other. Hopefully, we’ll get to the day where racism is no longer a thing in sports.
