The FA Cup always leaves good stories to tell and in this edition the protagonist of the fairy tale is Maidstone United. The team, from the sixth division and with Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Covolan as the starter, went to the fifth round by eliminating Ipswich, from the second category.

Separated by almost a hundred positions in the English football pyramid, the Stones, who are fifth in the National League South, beat the second-placed Championship team 2-1 away from home, which is in the middle of the fight to be promoted to the Premier League.

Lamar Reynolds and Sam Come scored the goals for Maidstone, a team from a town of the same name in the southeast of England, while Jeremy Sarmiento had put the temporary tie for the locals.

In the winners, Covolan, born in Curitiba, trained in Trieste and Vasco da Gama, and called up in 2010 with the Brazilian Under-20 team, was in charge. In August of last year he arrived at his current team, after several years defending the goals in different teams of the English promotion.

The goalkeeper had a great performance and was visibly emotional after the historic victory. “My career in recent years was not very good. All the bad parts of my career come to my mind, and this happens, it’s unreal,” said the 32-year-old goalkeeper.

“I had a great game. I’m so happy I was able to help my teammates. What we have achieved is incredible. It is the credit of all the fans. “We keep fighting until the end,” he told the BBC after the final whistle of the match.
