The national teams disputed the Copa América title five times: Brazil was crowned champion on May 29, 1919, 1-0, with a goal from Friedenreich, at Laranjeiras; on July 16, 1989, 1-0, thanks to Romário, at Maracanã; and on July 18, 1999, 3-0, with two goals from Rivaldo and one from Ronaldo, at Defensores Del Chaco, in Asunción (PAR).

Uruguay, on the other hand, lifted the trophy in 1983, 4-1 on aggregate, with matches at the Centenario and Arena Fonte Nova, and in 1995, on penalties 5-3, at the Centenario.

The Amarelinha has not suffered a negative result for the Celeste in the tournament since 1995, when the South American rivals overcame the Brazilians in the final 5-3 on penalties, after drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes, at the Centenario. The last defeat of Brazil in regular time, in the main competition of South America, was the 2-0 on October 27, 1983, at the Centenario.

Throughout the secular history of duels, the biggest rout applied by the Brazilian National Team happened in the friendly match at São Januário, on May 14, 1944. Lima (twice), Isaías, Tesourinha, Lima and Ruy scored the Brazilian goals.

The Amarelinha and the Celeste have been rivals for 108 years. The first meeting took place on July 12, 1916, in the Copa América, then called the South American Championship, and ended 2-1 for the Uruguayans.

In the last clash, on October 17, 2023, valid for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, Uruguay broke a 22-year drought without defeating Brazil. At the Centenario, in Montevideo, the Celeste won 2-0. Before this, the last defeat had been 1-0, on July 1, 2001, also at the Centenario in the Qualifiers.
