The Brazilian National Team has an impressive record against the United States, their opponents in the next preparatory match for the Copa América. Out of 18 games played, Brazil has won 17, with a 94.4% success rate, 40 goals scored and 11 conceded. The teams will face each other again on Wednesday (12), at 8pm, at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando (USA).

Despite the positive record, midfielder Bruno Guimarães predicts a balanced match and highlighted the quality of the Americans. “They are young players with experience. Players who have played or are in the Premier League. They use counter-attacks and leave players to use their speed. We saw some spaces that I can’t reveal, but we hope to do what Dorival showed us on video and be attentive to the counter-attacks,” said Bruno Guimarães.

This will be the first match since Brazil’s 2-0 victory on September 7, 2018, at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (USA). Neymar and Firmino scored the goals in that game. The national teams first faced each other on August 17, 1930, with a 4-3 victory for Brazil at the Estádio das Laranjeiras in Rio de Janeiro, with goals from Preguinho, Carvalho Leite, Doca and Theóphilo.

World Cup

In World Cups, the only clash was in the round of 16 of the 1994 World Cup, when the United States hosted the competition. After a pass from Romário, Bebeto beat the home team’s goalkeeper and started the journey in the knockout stage towards the Tetra (fourth World Cup title).

The play immortalized Bebeto’s celebration. After scoring the goal that secured qualification, he repeatedly told Romário: “I love you.”

Confederations Cup

With four games, the Confederations Cup is the tournament in which Brazilians and Americans have faced each other the most. Ronaldinho Gaúcho was responsible for the 1-0 win on July 28, 1999, at the Estádio Jalisco in Guadalajara (MEX). On June 21, 2003, it was Adriano’s turn to decide the match, at the Stade Gerland in Lyon (FRA).

In the 2009 edition, the Brazilian National Team won 3-0 in the group stage on June 18, thanks to Felipe Melo, Robinho and Maicon. Qualified for the final, Brazil and the United States disputed the title ten days later, won by Dunga’s team in a comeback, 3-2, with two goals from Luis Fabiano and one from Lúcio, at the Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg (RSA).

Biggest Victories

The biggest scorelines obtained by the Brazilian team were by a three-goal difference, in four games, including the triumph in the Confederations Cup. The first one was a 3-0 win on February 26, 1992, at the Castelão, where Raí (twice) and Antônio Carlos made the difference in a friendly match.

The other scores are 4-1. On May 30, 2012, at the FedEx Field in Washington (USA), Neymar, Thiago Silva and Marcelo were the goalscorers. On September 8, 2015, Neymar (twice), Hulk and Rafinha Alcântara secured the victory at the Gillette Stadium in Boston (USA).

Only Defeat

The only defeat suffered by the Brazilian National Team occurred on February 10, 1998, when the Americans beat the Brazilian team 1-0 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, at the Memorial Coliseum Stadium in Los Angeles (USA).

Remembering Zagallo

Sambafoot Series launched a new documentary about the football legend Zagallo. Known as ‘Velho Lobo‘ and as superstitious as it gets, Zagallo helped shape what Brazilian football is nowadays — as a player and as a coach.
