The year 2010 will forever remain engraved in the memory of Olympique de Marseille supporters, since it was the year of their last victory in Ligue 1. Brandao was part of this victorious team. However, since then, the Marseille club has failed to win the coveted title. After his Marseille adventure, the Brazilian made the decision to bounce back with AS Saint-Étienne, and he finally revealed the reasons for his departure during a recent interview.

Brandao left OM to “win” at ASSE

Two years after lifting the French champion trophy with OM, Brandao decided to leave the South of France to join the ranks of the ASSE Greens in 2012, at the end of his contract with the Phocéens. Speaking to TeamFootball, the former Brazilian striker spoke about the motivations that pushed him to make this change of direction.

” When I finished my contract in Marseille and arrived at Saint-Étienne, I went there to win! Saint-Étienne is magnificent! I won titles there, and I also finished 5th in Ligue 1 ,” he said.²

It is clear that Brandao was hungry for success and was looking for an environment conducive to conquering new titles. Perhaps he had sensed that OM was no longer able to achieve this feat.

At Saint-Étienne, the club he joined immediately after leaving Marseille, he managed to win a single trophy, the Coupe de la Ligue, in the first year of his transfer. A modest harvest, but which contrasts with the years of scarcity that OM experienced after his departure. This is where Brandao’s flair may have made the difference.
