After what seemed like an eternity, Botafogo finally claimed a win at Nilton Santos.
Fogão might have been relegated but finally claimed a win after 10 games. In fact, Botafogo had lost nine out of their last ten Serie A fixtures, taking only a point from that run in a 1-1 draw against Palmeiras at the start of February.
For their latest rare victory against São Paulo, a red card to Reinaldo in the 30th minute tipped the game in the favor of Botafogo.
The decisive goal of the game came by Babi Matheus in the 56th minute. The forward was only on the pitch for 10 minutes, having just come on for the start of the 45th minute.
Another big talking point in the game came in the 84th minute when Luciano got a penalty and a chance to level the matters. However, Diego Loureiro stepped up to save the resulting penalty and keep his side in the game.
Had Luciano scored, he could have moved to the top of the goal-scoring charts with 18 goals.
The result also means São Paulo must win their last game to be guaranteed of a direct spot for the group stage of the next edition of the Libertadores.
With the win, Botafogo moved up to 27points despite their relegation. On the other hand, São Paulo remain in fourth place with 63 points.
With only two points above fifth place Fluminense, Tricolor have it all to do in their final game against Flamengo. Given Fla’s push for the title as well, São Paulo might have a part to play in the title race.
