On this Monday (12), Botafogo celebrates 120 years of history in football. On August 12, 1904, the club from the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro began its journey as Botafogo Football Club to become one of the great teams in Brazilian football. The idea came from two friends: Flávio Ramos and Emmanuel Sodré.

This date (12) is one of three important milestones in the history of Glorioso. The Botafogo Rowing Club was founded on July 1, 1894, for rowing, one of the main sports in Brazil at the time. Subsequently, the Botafogo Football Club was created, and on December 8, 1942, the two organizations merged to form Botafogo de Futebol e Regatas.

Much of the Brazilian National Team’s success in World Cups is due to players from Botafogo. Over the years, Glorioso has been the club that has provided the most athletes to the national team for the World Cup, with notable players including Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Didi, Zagallo, Gérson, Jairzinho, Manga, Paulo Cézar Caju, Amarildo, Mauro Galvão, and Bebeto.

The rest of the list includes the following players: Benedicto, Carvalho Leite, Nilo, Pamplona, Octacilio, Pedroza, Waldir, Ariel, Attila, Canalli, Germano, Martim Silveira, Nariz, Patesko, Perácio, Zezé Procópio, Rildo, Roberto Miranda, Dirceu, Marinho Chagas, Gil, Rodrigues Neto, Paulo Sérgio, Alemão, Josimar, Gonçalves, and Jefferson.

In its long history, the club has won two Brasileirão titles (1968 and 1995), four Rio-São Paulo Tournaments (1962, 1964, 1966, and 1998), one Copa Conmebol (1993), as well as 21 Carioca Championships and two Series B titles in the Brazilian Championship (2015 and 2021).

Currently, Botafogo leads the Betano Brasileirão with 43 points and will face Palmeiras on Wednesday (14) in the round of 16 of the Conmebol Libertadores, a title that would be unprecedented for the Alvinegro.

In addition to the men’s football, the General Severiano team also has a women’s team called Gloriosas. Next Saturday (17), they will return to the field for the A1 Women’s Brasileirão in search of climbing the championship table.
