Atlético managed to keep possession of the ball and had several corners in their favor in the initial stage. Hyoran’s charges resulted in two balls in the team post. But, at the same time, Botafogo took advantage of the spaces left by Galo in the counterattacks. In one, Luis Herirque received a free kick on the left, left Guga longing and kicked for Rafael to partially defend. On the rebound, Luis Fernando lunged in and opened the scoring.
Both sides continued to threaten but the first half ended that way.
The second half started with Botafogo keeping their intent to attack Atletico on the counter. Paulo Autuori’s men had to put in a lot of work in defense, as Galo remained in control of the offensive actions.
Hyoran twice failed to finish. Atlético also hit the goalkeeper’s post in a beautiful volley by Savarino. But Botafogo almost doubled their lead with Bruno Nazário but after reviewing the VAR, the referee pointed to Matheus Babi at the origin of the move (with a serious failure by Junior Alonso, saved by technology). But the Paraguayan would falter.
In a good collective move, Botafogo doubled their lead. Caio Alexandre entered the small area of Atlético alone and made it 2-0. In the final seconds of the game, Igor Rabello received the ball from Jair and managed to score for Atletico. It only turned out to be a consolation goal at the end of the day.
Botafogo will have their next game against Flamengo in the next round on Sunday. On the other hand, Atletico return to play away from home and visit Internacional in Porto Alegre on Saturday.
