The negotiation was a pretty swift one and didn’t drag out slowly at all. The Argentine turned the ball around after frustrated deals with Venezuelan César Farías who was not released by the Bolivian national team. Díaz, on the other hand, has been without a club since he left Libertad of Paraguay in September.

At 61, the Argentine will have his first opportunity in Brazilian football.

The new coach arrives in Rio de Janeiro this Saturday.

As the club still needs to go through the bureaucracy to register it with CBF, his debut should be for next week. However, there is a chance that he will accompany the delegation to Salvador for the 20th round of the Brasileirão against Bahia.

Díaz will be Botafogo’s fourth coach this season. The club started 2020 with Alberto Valentim, dismissed in March and succeeded by Paulo Autuori. In September, another change came in with Bruno Lazaroni who stayed in office for about a month.

During his playing days, Ramón Díaz was an important player in Argentine football mainly in River Plate and in the national team. After hanging up his boots, he led teams like San Lorenzo and Independiente in his native country as well as River himself where he was a multi-champion. On the international scene, he has worked in England, Mexico and Paraguay.

For their next outing, Botafogo will travel to Salvador to take on Bahia at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova on Sunday in the Brazilian Championship.
