Botafogo and Santos played an open game, with good chances (especially for the visitors), on this rainy night this Sunday. However, it was quite an injustice to both sides that the game failed to produce a winner despite a good display on the pitch from both ends.
The game was valid for the 11th round of the Brazilian Championship.
In particular, the result is particularly bad for Botafogo as they have now gone on a run of seven games without a win in the competition. Hence, it is no surprise they remain rooted in the relegation zone. And it could have been worse for the home team if not for goalkeeper Gatito Fernandez who made important saves in the match to keep his side in the game.
It could have been even more devastating when Caio Alexandre was initially given a red card towards the end of the first half. However, after a VAR review, the Botafogo star saw his offence reversed to a yellow card. Huge relief for Paulo Autuori.
With the result, Santos lie in seventh place and stuck in the classification zone for Libertadores, with 16 points. Botafogo, with ten points, remain rooted to the relegation zone and lie in 18th place.
The two teams return to the field at midweek. On Wednesday, Botafogo faces Vasco in São Januário for the Copa do Brasil. On Thursday, Santos will travel to Ecuador to face Delfin for Libertadores. Both sides will return to the Brasileirão on Sunday. Botafogo visits Atlético-GO on Sunday evening while Santos receives Fortaleza in a later fixture on the same day.
