Bizarre fact:

  • Paysandu defeated Ponte Preta 1-0 this Saturday in the Série B of the Brazilian Championship.
  • Left-back Zé Mário from Ponte Preta remained on the field for 16 minutes with two yellow cards.
  • The player was only sent off by the referee after VAR intervention.

Two yellow cards:

Zé Mário was first cautioned in the seventh minute of the first half after a strong tackle on Jean Dias. For protesting, the Ponte Preta player received a second yellow card.

VAR in action:

However, the player stayed on the field until the 23rd minute of the first half. At that moment, VAR alerted referee Yuri Elino Ferreira to confirm whether the card shown was indeed for Zé Mário. With confirmation, the Ponte Preta player was finally sent off the game, albeit late.

Outrage:

The incident left players from the São Paulo team outraged. During the halftime break, midfielder Elvis contested the referee’s decision. The Ponte Preta player claimed that the referee had said the card for dissent was shown to defender Joílson, not to Zé Mário.

“The referee on the field said that the card was for another player of ours. Then VAR wanted to make an appearance and called. How can VAR, from outside the field, guess that the card was given to our left-back?” exclaimed Elvis.

“They are looking for things, found something, and ruined the game. All our work ended up in this mess they made,” he criticized.

Paysandu defeated Ponte Preta with a score of 1-0, with a goal from Paulinho Bóia.
