How often is it that your youth team graduates come back to haunt you? Fernando Morientes famously did it to Real Madrid. The Spaniard now has company in Kingsley Coman.
Paris Saint-Germain academy graduate was the star of the night, scoring the only goal of the game for Bayern Munich. At the other end of the pitch, Manuel Neuer put up a goalkeeping clinic to display why he is the best goalkeeper in the world.
The duo will steal the headlines but it was an exhausting display of perfection from Bayern Munich that gave them their sixth Champions League title.
A string of missed chances early on from PSG and some saves from Neuer put the game at bay and level until the end of the first half.
The second half is where things got interesting and we got an opener.
In the 59th minute, Kimmich provided the assist for Coman’s goal. Looking at a wall of Paris defenders, Kimmich looped the ball in the air. It found an unmarked Coman, whose header made it across the line.
Paris rallied and tried to attack but their efforts were thwarted again and again. Thomas Tuchel sent in Choupo-Moting ahead of Mauro Icardi and it hurt their chances.
With the victory, Bayern Munich won their sixth Champions League title on Sunday evening in Lisbon. It was Bayern’s first European title since 2013 and capped a remarkable season in which they wrapped up their Treble.
Nonetheless, Neymar later took to social media to pay tribute to the PSG supporters and assured them he and his teammates gave it everything.
“Losing is part of the sport, we try everything, we fight until the end,” Neymar wrote on Twitter.
“Thanks for the support and affection of everyone. Congratulations Bayern.”
Like Neymar, however, the 21-year-old insisted PSG gave it everything again and congratulated Bayern on winning the Champions League.
“Disappointed not to end this year with the best of awards, but life is made that way,” Mbappe wrote on Twitter.
“We fought with all our might. Congratulations to Bayern. And a big thank you for your support.”
PSG will next begin the defense of their Ligue 1 title in Saturday’s season opener away to Lens.
