Gremio seem to be masking the loss of Luis Suárez through a strong start in the Campeonato Gaúcho, where they lead the standings with 15 points after six rounds (W5 L1). However, the fans don’t seem to be as excited as last year.

Globo Esporte noticed that attendance has significantly decreased compared to the start of the 2023 season, with a total of 54,045 spectators in three home games in the state tournament, an average of 18,015 per game. Last year, over 100,000 Gremio supporters attended the first three home games.

In fact, only the opening game of 2023 saw a 49,614 attendance, almost the total for 2024 so far. Clearly, the expectation for that match against São Luiz was much higher not only because it was the Recopa Gaúcha, but also because it represented Suárez’s debut in Porto Alegre. That day, the Uruguayan scored a hat-trick to secure the title. From then on, most games were played in front of a full house.
