Atlético-MG claimed a convincing 3-1 home victory over Atlético-GO on Sunday night. Hyoran and Alonso scored in the first half making it 2 nil before the break. Jair added to the goal tally in the second half and Janderson got a consolation for Atlético-GO later on.
The home side was in full control of the game as they dominated play from the start very start and got their opening goal in the 14th minute. After a poor headed clearance from Natanael, Hyoran pounced on the opportunity to strike from the edge of the box and draw first blood for the hosts.
Atlético-MG continued with dictating the play after their opening goal. They had several chances to double their advantage minutes later with Savarino and Hyoran being the orchestrators.
However, the home side managed to double their lead two minutes before the break when defender Junior Alonso was at the end of Savarino’s cross following a free kick.
After the break, Atlético-MG weren’t finished just yet. They continued dominating play and causing more problems for the visitors. They had several big chances to score and finally added one more in the 62nd minute. This time, it was from a corner kick. Jair rose higher than his marker to head the ball into the back of the net to make it 3-0 for the host.
Atlético-GO boss Cabo then made several changes to his side. He brought in Arnaldo, Janderson and Oliveira in place of Natanael, Chico and Pereira. 11 minutes later, substitute Janderson got his name on the score sheet following a counter attack situation to make it 3-1.
Atlético-MG will return to face Grêmio on Wednesday in an important game for the top-four spots. Elsewhere, Atlético-GO will travel to face Botafogo that same day.
