It was a lively game in Ronaldão as Atlético-MG traveled to take on Caldense. Both sides had different ambitions going into the game. Caldense needed a win to remain in the top four of the Mineiro Championship while Atlético-MG were aiming to maintain their 100 percent record and leadership status in the competition.
It seemed like it was going to plan and Galo even opened the scoring just after 20 minutes, with Keno breaking the deadlock.
However, Caldense came back an inspired side in the second half and claimed a comeback win, courtesy goals from Verrone and Gabriel Tonini.
It was a disappointing day for Hulk, who saw little service and was mostly isolated until he was replaced by Eduardo Sasha in the second half.
For Caldense, the win over Atlético was an historic one as they defeated Galo only the second time since both sides have met competitively. The first time it happened goes all the way back to 1974.
Regardless of the loss, Atlético remain top of the Mineiro Championship with 15 points. Although, América are now also on 15 points and Galo are only top due to a superior goal difference. With the victory, Caldense moved up to third position with 11 points.
Speaking after the game, Caldense goalscorer Tonini expressed his delight at a hard-fought victory. He said: “Very happy for everything we have been doing in the championship. The work has been done. Very happy. Thank God, my family and my girlfriend. We have done great things here”
Both teams return to the pitch this weekend for the next round of the Mineiro Championship. A top of the table clash awaits when Atletico take on América on Sunday while Caldense will face Pouso Alegre on the same day.
