Despite having the best attack of the Brazilian Championship, the Rooster couldn’t grind out a victory.
Atlético-MG dominated the play and had all the possession of the ball but most of their efforts were stopped by the hands of goalkeeper Luan Poli. The stalemate leaves the Minas Gerais club in third place, two points behind Inter and Flamengo who face each other later on Sunday.
Jair Ventura’s team, the Lions remains in 11th place, and needed the draw to break their losing streak.
Atlético-MG came into the game with the same game plan as the match against Bahia, with possession of the ball and giving Sport no chance to operate.
Sport defended well to keep out the attacks of the home side but it lasted for just 30 minutes. The Rooster got their opportunity to score after they finally found space in the away side’s defense and had three chances to draw the first blood of the game.
First, a very well taken shot by Savarino from outside the area, then, Jair’s effort after receiving a good pass from Keno, and Keno’s effort after a mistake from Márcio Araújo. All three saved by Sport’s goalkeeper Luan Poli.
In the opening 45 minutes of the game, the home side had 14 shots taken at goal without scoring.
In the second half, the game remained the same as the first, except Atlético having no clear cut chances to score. In the opening minutes of the second period, Luan Poli stood out and made two great saves. Then Sport tried to counter attack through Thiago Neves but failed. Atlético couldn’t break through the defence of the Red-black Pernambuco and the game ended 0-0.
