As happened in two other matches in this Brasileirão, Atlético-MG came out on the scoreboard, but showed great mentality and reaction power. Sampaoli’s team saw Benitez open the scoring for Vasco at the start of the match. Benitez scored a great goal that was worthy of praise but you never know what to expect when you play the leaders.
In superb fashion, Atlético-MG turned the tie around with Arana, Savarino, Guga and Keno.
With a 4-1 rout, Atlético-MG ended the round in the lead and reached the sequence of four consecutive victories.
Vasco has not won in three games and is out of the G-6.
At Atlético-MG since last year, right-back Guga scored his first goal with the white shirt. After Carlinhos‘ penalty on Nathan, the full-back soon took the ball to take the kick. Without taking much distance, he ran, stopped, and chose the low left corner of goalkeeper Fernando Miguel to score the third goal for the Rooster.
With a wide gap growing at the top, Atlético-MG are up to 27 points and open a five point gap ahead of Internacional, vice-leader, with one game less. Without winning for three games, Vasco remain at 18 points and ends the 14th round in 9th place.
After two consecutive games at Mineirão, Atlético-MG plays away from home in the 14th round, against Fortaleza, in Castelão, on Wednesday. Vasco will go on to the second straight game away from São Januário. Ramon Menezes’ team goes to Salvador, where they face Bahia, at Pituaçu stadium also on Wednesday.
