Atlético-MG beat América de Cali 3-1 away from home, as goals from Hulk, Guilherme Arana and Vargas helped a dominating Brazilian side secure a victory and mathematically secure a place in the Libertadores round of 16.
Despite the score-line, the talking point of the game mostly came off the pitch. The game was stopped no less than five times due to heated protests outside the stadium. Civilians and police clashed outside the stadium and there was even tear gas on the pitch for a good part of the game.
Moving to the match itself, the game started open for both teams, with each side creating several chances and giving an exciting match up to watch.
Galo struck first through Hulk, as the Brazilian forward headed in a beautiful cross from Nacho in the 21st minutes.
However, the visitors lead didn’t last as long as they would like, with Moreno drawing level for América de Cali three minutes later from a quick counterattack.
In the 54th minute, Guilherme Arana put the visitors in front after a great play from Savarino. The Brazilian side added to their advantage in stoppages, just before the final whistle as Vargas got to the end of Tardelli’s pass, rounded up the goalkeeper and secured the victory.
Hulk continues his good form
Another goal for Hulk in Atlético-MG colors means the veteran forward has now scored five goals in his last three games for the club. His goals have proven to be pivotal in Galo’s impressive group stage campaign in the Libertadores so far.
The victory in Barranquilla mathematically qualifies Atlético-MG to the round of 16. They are first on the table in group H, with 10 points, three points more than second place Cerro Porteño, and seven points off La Guaira in third place.
