For the first time since 2014, Atletico Madrid have been crowned champions of the Spanish La Liga after a 2-1 comeback win at Real Valladolid, on Saturday, that saw them clinch the title ahead of their city rivals Real Madrid.
Valladolid had taken an early lead in the first half over Atletico, before goals from Angel Correa and Luis Suarez completed the turnaround in the second half, for the second game running.
A draw or a loss would have deemed costly, because Real Madrid had a late turnaround and beat Villarreal 2-1, Suarez made sure that didn’t happen making their rival victory irrelevant at the end.
The result means Diego Simeone’s team finished the season with 86 points, two points more than Real Madrid and have won three League title under the Argentine manager, eleven in total in the Clubs’ history, with three of them coming in the last 40 years, in 1996, 2014 and now 2021.
Added to the three League titles, Diego Simeone has also won a Copa del Rey and a Supercopa Espana, as well as two Europa League and two UEFA Super Cups, after ten years in charge of the Rojiblanco.
The stand out performers of the teams’ title campaign this season was forward Luis Suarez, who scored 21 goals and 3 assists, and Marcos Llorente, who after been converted into an attacking midfielder bagging 12 goals and 11 assists, this season.
Barcelona deemed Luis Suarez a ‘finished’ player and it has now come to haunt them back in less than a season, with El Pistolero being the main story in Atletico’s title win.
For Griezmann, it is some sort of despair for him as his former side have now won the title again before him, considering he left to Barcelona for a title win in the first place.
