Atletico Madrid faltered in La Liga again as Sevilla put a major blow to their La Liga aspirations.
A header from Marcos Acuna in the 70th minute proved to be the difference in what was an entertaining game.
The Argentine was left unmarked after he poked home a cross from Jesus Navas that went past Jan Oblak.
Both sides had two Brazilians in their lineups on the evening. Diego Carlos and Fernando featured for Sevilla while Felipe and Renan Lodi starred for Atletico Madrid.
Atletico have Oblak to thank for a lesser deficit after the goalkeeper saved Lucas Ocampos’ penalty in the first half.
Atletico are in pursuit of their first La Liga crown since 2014 and their once impressive lead at the top has been reduced to a solitary point over Barcelona in second place.
Towards the very end, Los Rojiblancos pushed forward to salvage something from the game but Angel Correa saw his effort saved by Yassine Bounou in stoppage time.
Reacting to the game and speaking after the game, Atletico manager Diego Simeone said: "I’m sure I know the way and I’m not afraid of anything"
"This isn’t happening because of nerves. Being able to play better, being a strong unit, I don’t think it’s down to nerves."
The Argentine added: "We have to keep working and up the intensity, that’s what gave us more of a chance [in the first place] aside from talent. I’m not budging on anything, but we have to accept we’re in bad form. The Spanish league is tough until the end in every title race."
Atletico would now be hoping the El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona on Saturday ends in a stalemate, provided they can make the most of whatever result by returning to winning ways in their own game against Real Betis.
