Atlético-GO took all three points against Fluminense on Wednesday night at the Antônio Accioly stadium. Wellington Rato and goalkeeper Jean scored in either half for Dragão while Felippe Cardoso bagged one late on which was only a mere consolation goal for Fluminense.
The first half generally took a slow place. Both teams chased every loose ball but there was little to no creativity on the offensive front. In fact, the first real chance of the game came in the 38th minute after Dudu was left with a spillover but sent his effort wide. Following that sequence, Atlético-GO improved and eventually got their goal just before half time. Following a great team move, Wellington Rato got to the end of it to open the scoring.
The second half started just like the first. Fluminense saw more of the ball but the final creativity in opposition half was lacking.
Atlético-GO looked to double their lead and made some chances of their own after Natanael and goal-scorer Wellington saw their efforts saved.
The game remained that way until Atlético-GO were awarded a penalty in the 87th minute after a VAR review showed Nenê handled in the box. Goalkeeper Jean stepped up to take the penalty and scored.
Fluminense at least got some consolation for themselves when Felippe Cardoso pulled one back in stoppage time to see the game end 2-1 in favor of Atlético-GO.
With the result, Atlético-GO are in ninth place with 34 points and four behind Santos a spot above them. However, they can still be overtaken by Corinthians and Ceará. Fluminense missed out on the chance to temporarily go into top four and remain in seventh place with 40 points.
