Lucas Paquetá’s situation regarding his alleged involvement in sports betting remains one of the major uncertainties heading into the 2024/25 Premier League season.

The player, who was once sought after by Flamengo to return to Brazil on loan, seems set to stay at West Ham United, where his new coach, Julen Lopetegui, has welcomed him with open arms.

What has changed regarding Paquetá?

  • The player is still under investigation for his alleged participation in four instances where he reportedly received yellow cards deliberately to benefit the betting market.
  • If a sanction is imposed, it could be historic, as some media speculate that he could face a punishment that would keep him away from professional football for life.
  • Flamengo expressed interest in his loan, but West Ham does not plan to loan him out and will only consider transfer offers.
  • The outcome of the investigation is not expected until the end of the 2024/25 season, meaning Paquetá could participate in nearly the entire tournament.
  • Following his strong performance in the Copa América, Paquetá has joined West Ham’s preseason, where he met his new coach, Julen Lopetegui.

Julen Lopetegui welcomes Lucas Paquetá with open arms

The Spanish coach of West Ham United, Julen Lopetegui, has previously expressed his willingness to work closely with Paquetá for the upcoming season.

The strategist, who replaced David Moyes as manager of the London club, stated in early July that he would support the Brazilian player during this difficult time:

“We know that he and his family are suffering a lot right now. I’ve seen him smile in his recent matches, which is good. We are his family, and we will take care of him,” he affirmed.

As for the 2024/25 season, Paquetá had more days of rest due to his participation in the Copa América and only joined the London club’s preseason in the United States on Wednesday (31/7).

After reuniting with his teammates, Paquetá was filmed by the club’s media at the exact moment he met his new coach face to face.

After a warm welcome, a handshake, and a brief hug, Lopetegui expressed his happiness in meeting the talented Brazilian player, who, if able to play the season without issues, is expected to be one of his offensive weapons in the upcoming season.
