The highlight of the second leg of the game was Teixeira who was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool before joining Jiangsu for 50 million euros in 2016 game.

The former Vasco da Gama and Shakhtar Donetsk maestro lit up the second leg in front of 9,386 spectators in Suzhou,

after having a dull first leg encounter which ended in a goalless draw. The crowd was limited in the stadium due to the lingering coronavirus threat.

Teixeira was the orchestrator of the opening goal after dribbling from deep within his half of the pitch into the opponent’s dangerous area before he was brought down after getting through on goal resulting to a red card.  Eder then drew first blood from a free kick position following a review from VAR

The forward later scored the second goal two minutes into the second half. Substitute Wei Shihao pulled one back for Cannavaro’s side in the 61st minute but Jiangsu held on and took the Guangzhou’s league crown.

“As I told them before the game, everything in this life is about happiness and memories, and this they will remember for all their life,” said Cosmin Olaroiu, Jiangsu’s coach who has won league championships in his native Romania, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and now China. For most of them, it’s their first trophy.”

Prior to this victory, their best ever performance in the CSL was twice runners-up, each time behind former champions Guangzhou who have won it eight times.

Brazilian international Paulinho said his side, the former champions, should have no complaints “We want to tell the fans sorry, today we have let you down,” the 32-year-old said.
