At 35 years old, Agustín Marchesín has a unique opportunity in the final stretch of his career: to establish himself as Gremio’s starting goalkeeper. It turns out that the Porto Alegre team has had difficulties to fill in the position since Marcelo Grohe left the club, with eight different keepers in the last five years.

Grohe even was linked to a possible return this year due to the problems the club faced without him, although finally, the Argentine arrives with the mission of solving this issue. Caíque and Gabriel Grando agreed to contract extension, but they would run from behind this season.

Gremio’s goalkeeper issues

It all started in 2018, with Grohe’s departure to Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad. Paulo Victor, until then a substitute, was promoted to the starting position, while the front office also brought in Júlio César from Fluminense. However, neither of them lived up to the expectations.

In 2020 Vanderlei arrived from Santos, but from the following year, Brenno and Gabriel Grando began to take turns defending the goal until the relegation in 2021. The first one took over the position in the campaign to return to the Brasileirao, until he left for Italy and left his place for Adriel, who left a few months later for Bahia. Grando returned to the lineup, but Caíque, who joined Gremio during 2023 from Ypiranga, ended up as the starter.

The other two who played for Gremio in this period were Phelipe Megiolaro and Felipe Sheibig, although they did not have many appearances. Marchesín, under contract until 2025, hopes to end the carousel of goalkeepers and become the definitive starter for a long time.
