In a significant milestone, Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira marked three years of tireless dedication to Palmeiras last week. During this period, he etched his name in the history books by shattering numerous records and clinching eight illustrious titles, with the tantalizing prospect of a ninth on the horizon. Yet, the path to success was far from easy, marred by an exhausting daily routine.

As he contemplates the chapters of his Brazilian football journey, Abel grapples with uncertainty about his future. His current contract with Verdão is set to conclude by the end of 2024, but the club aspires to extend it through 2027, contingent on President Leila Pereira’s potential re-election next year.

Mental health and the need for change in the game

In a candid moment, Abel delves into the challenges he’s faced, and the mental toll that the game has taken on him. He dares to question the impact of football on one’s overall well-being and hints at the necessity for profound changes. In his words,

“I had difficult periods here, with my health, not only physical, but mental, too. I already said it in the last game, and people here don’t want to know that. That’s why I have to think very carefully about what I want, because here football doesn’t make anyone healthy. If you have doubts, look at me three years ago and look now. Something will have to change”

On certain occasions, Abel has toyed with the idea of a sabbatical in 2025, a well-deserved break that could follow the expiration of his Palmeiras contract. The looming uncertainty regarding his future has cast a shadow over his recent months.

Residing in São Paulo with his wife and daughters, the Portuguese coach has found a sense of belonging at Palmeiras. However, he doesn’t shy away from voicing his grievances about the grueling Brazilian football calendar and his perception of unequal treatment, particularly concerning refereeing decisions.

During the tributes honoring his three-year stint at Palmeiras, Abel Ferreira’s emotions overflowed. Although he does not convey an immediate desire to depart, the prospect of a renewed contract is far from a straightforward matter.

To him,

“Turbulence is part of it. And for me, that’s what defines a true champion. We take advantage of what is happening to rebuild ourselves to come stronger. It’s been three years of a lot of learning. Some titles won, many others lost”

In his resolute pursuit of goals, including securing his ninth title with Verdão at the year’s end, Abel stands as a testament to unwavering determination. His next challenge unfolds on Wednesday, an away clash against Flamengo, as he continues his quest for a third title this season, this time in the Brasileiro.
