The competition was paused following the completion of the second round of Group Stage fixtures on March 12th. This measure was taken in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to safeguard the health of the players, staff, delegations, referees, directors, press, and fans.
The South American Football Confederation announced the dates of 16 third round fixtures of the group stage on Monday.
The soccer body did not announce further dates for the remaining fixtures. All matches are expected to be played behind closed doors when they resume.
The South American club tournaments was halted in March by CONMEBOL and initially expected to resume in May. But since then the virus outbreak in the region has become worse especially in countries like Brazil, Ecuador and Chile. Others, such as Argentina and Peru, are beginning to have sudden increase in cases and deaths.
A full schedule of dates and times is expected to be announced in due time.
As it stands, there are 32 teams still remaining in the tournament, divided up into eight groups of four. So far each team has played two group matches.
The final has already been marked for a January date and would be at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium.
The first game of the restart will be a Group C clash between Bolivia’s Jorge Wilstermann and Brazil’s Athlético.
Two days later, defending champions Flamengo of Brazil will travel to Ecuador to face Independiente del Valle, last year’s winner of the Copa Sudamericana.
