The reason Everson is asking for his contract to be terminated amounts to delay in wages alongside his image rights. Although, the club suspects he is already negotiating in the background with with Atlético-MG, coached by Jorge Sampaoli, with whom he worked at Vila Belmiro last year.
Apparently, Santos owe Everson more than four months of image rights and also 70% of the last three months wages. Back in May, the club made the harsh decision to cut the salaries of all employees who receive more than R $ 6 thousand salary. They did this without an agreement with the players and their reason was due to financial difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
In the background, Santos see Everson’s attitude as risky and they believe he already has an agreement with another club, most likely Atletico-MG. It’s important to note that Jorge Sampaoli was the same coach that took Everson to Santos while he was at Ceara. Coincidentally, Atletico-MG released their goalkeeper Micheal on Sunday.
In an interview last month, Santos president José Carlos Peres said he “trusted the squad” and that “there would be no risk” of players going to court against the club.
So far, the club have not made an official comment about it but there is a growing fear that other players could follow suit like Everson and also take the club to court.
Everson was hired by Santos at the beginning of last year. He played 52 games and was the no 1 starter under Jesualdo Ferreira.
